A compilation of legal documents, originals and copies, relating principally to collection of debts, taxes, property disputes, or criminal cases, and other legal papers of lay and ecclesiastical tribunals. Certified copies of documents relating to a suit for payment of tithes, brought against certain religious orders by the representative of the crown and the ecclesiastical officials of New Spain and Peru, ca. 1664. File on the suit brought by Francisco de la Cruz, Martín Lázaro and others, natives of Chontalcuatlán (near Mexico City) against Juan de Santiago and Pedro Joseph, natives of the same town, for theft of mules and other animals, Mexico, June-July, 1675; written partly in an Indian language. Petition of November 29, 1690, for confirmation of a sentence absolving Magdalena de Fonseca, widow of Alonso Fernández Rincón, from a debt incurred by her son, Juan Rincón, for which suit had been brought against her by Alonso Martínez de Pina. Appeal from a sentence, Cuernavaca(?), ca. 1705, against Miguel de Villalobos, for charges of rape and related crimes. Documents originating in Madrid and Mexico City relating to collection through the Real Acuerdo, of funds owed to the Merchants' Board of Seville by the Board's agents in Mexico, Miguel de Ubilla and Captain Lucas de Careaga, 1709. Two petitions, Mexico, 1736, of Francisco Antonio de Echávarri, a judge of the Audencia of Mexico, for recognition of his claims in a dispute on precedence with another member of that body, Domingo Valc/a\arcel y Formento. Document of Canon Juan de Castro, Mexico, ca. 1738, on evaluation of an estate purchased from the Conde del Fresno by Manuel de la Pena and later siezed by Pena's creditors, arguing that the appraisal made by the ecclesiastical tribunal was too high. File of papers written in Durango and Mexico, May 3 - November 8(?), 1748, on the imprisonment and trial of Sisimble Indians charged with murder and robbery in the vicinity of Mapimí, New Vizcaya. Brief for the defense, Mexico, July 30, 1757, of Salvador Clavel in the suit of Josefa de Florencia, widow of Manuel de Villate, for payment of a debt owed to Villate by Juan Bautista Clavel, deceased brother of the defendant. Incomplete file from San Miguel de Horcasitas and Sahuaripa, February 4 - March 7, 1768, concerning collection of a debt owed by the Sahuaripa mission. An incomplete record, Mexico, 1769, of the case of Juliana María, an Indian accused of sorcery in San Miguel Acatlán, jurisdiction of Tulancingo, Hidalgo, including correspondence between the acting ecclesiastical judge, José Tamariz, and officials of the archdiocese. File on the trial of an Indian, Santiago Antonio, Mexico, 1774-1776, charged with superstitious medical practices, including records of ecclesiastical courts in the jurisdiction of Tulancingo and those of the Mexico City Tribunal for Indians and Chinese. File of documents and correspondence sent principally to or from the Alcalde Mayor of San Luis de la Paz, 1784-1785, on restoration of property rights to the exiled Jesuits, with the royal instructions of 1783-1784 on pertinent legal measures. Document recording power of attorney, Puebla, November 13, 1792, by Esteban Munuera to Antonio Monteagudo, Assistant Secretary of Archbishop Núnez de Haro y Peralta. Plea on behalf of Toribio Fernández de Ribera's client, Ignacio de Echeverría, sargento mayor of Puebla (18th cent.?), asking that the authority of the latter over the Commercial Company of Puebla be upheld. Brief on behalf of María Teresa de Medina by Salvador Zúniga y Barrios (Mexico, 18th cent.?), in her suit for recovery of three sites owned by her and appropriated by Juan Ignacio Larranaga for the pasturage of animals used in mining projects, with some information on mining legislation. Brief prepared by El Doctor Machado, Mexico, n.d., in proceedings instituted against Francisco de Negrete by his creditors, chief of whom was Baltasar de los Ríos. Plea addressed to the Papal delegate in Puebla by former members of the Franciscan Third Order in Toluca, n.d., protesting their expulsion and requesting reinstatement. Fragment of a report, n.d., n.p., in defense of an unnamed provincial and other members of a religious order who refused to acknowledge their excommunication by a bishop, and citing authorities to exhalt the status of monastic administrators in relation to that of bishops. Plea presented by Martín de Pinedo y Alarcón, Mexico, n.d., on behalf of a restored Carmelite convent, in its suit against the Royal Fiscal for revocation of a decree passed by the Audencia of Mexico declaring it to be a new establishment, and for recognition as a continuing old establishment.
